How long have you been running your business?

Akwaaba African Art and Craft was registered by Kofi in 1996. Retail trading began from a small shop on Essex Street in Fremantle. Kofi started teaching and performing soon after. We are now based at the Wanneroo Markets in Wangara (since 2009) where we have our retail shop and run regular African drumming classes. During the warmer months we also run a free community drum circle on a Sunday morning every 4-6 weeks.

Where do your products come from?

Most of our products are sourced from Ghana, where Kofi is originally from. Over the years we have formed friendships and partnerships with many tailors, drum makers and artisans in Ghana who we buy our goods directly from.

Do you have African drummers and dancers in your performances?

Because our aim is to showcase traditional African music and culture we have a team of reliable and talented artists who were either born in Africa or have African heritage. ​​

 

Can you reskin and tune djembes?

Yes we can. We do need to have a look at it to confirm the cost so it's best to bring it into the shop.

Where are your djembes made?

Our djembes and dun duns are hand carved in Ghana. Once the drum shells arrive we then skin them using local WA goat skins.
